Covers email campaigns with segmentation, drip sequences and A/B tests, and AI across e-commerce: product descriptions, recommendations, shopping assistants and review summaries. Includes funnel and ROI numericals and a cosine-similarity recommender.
13.1 Email marketing and where AI fits
Email remains a direct, low-cost channel that the business controls. Generative AI helps at every stage:
| Stage | AI support | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Segmentation | Groups customers by behaviour and suggests segments | "First-time buyers", "lapsed 90 days", "high spenders" |
| Subject lines | Generates many variants to test | 10 subject lines under 50 characters, different emotional angles |
| Body copy | Drafts personalised content for each segment | Different offers for students and for parents |
| Personalisation | Inserts name, last purchase, location-based offers | "Riya, the kurta you viewed is back in stock" |
| Send-time optimisation | Predicts when each person is most likely to open | Morning for some, evening for others |
| Analysis | Explains campaign results in plain language | "Why did the Tuesday email underperform?" |
Key terms
- Drip campaign: a series of automated emails sent on a schedule or triggered by actions. Example: welcome email on sign-up, tips on day 3, offer on day 7.
- Trigger email: sent automatically after an event, such as an abandoned cart, a birthday or a delivery.
- A/B test: sending two versions to small random groups, then sending the winner to the rest.
- Open rate, click-through rate (CTR), click-to-open rate (CTOR), conversion rate: the standard funnel metrics (Numerical 13.1).
Example: an abandoned-cart drip sequence with AI-written copy
| Timing | AI prompt idea | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour after | Gentle reminder | "Write a friendly 60-word reminder showing the item left in the cart; no discount." |
| 24 hours after | Social proof | "Add two short genuine customer review highlights and a clear 'Complete your order' button text." |
| 72 hours after | Small incentive | "Offer free delivery for 48 hours; create gentle urgency without pressure." |
Compliance and ethics. Send only to people who have agreed to receive emails, include a working unsubscribe link, and handle personal data lawfully. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 requires consent and purpose limitation for processing personal data. Never let AI invent reviews, fake scarcity or false claims.
Tools: Mailchimp, HubSpot, Zoho Campaigns, Klaviyo and similar platforms offer built-in AI features for subject lines, content and send-time optimisation. Jasper and Copy.ai are AI writing tools used for marketing copy.
13.2 AI in e-commerce
Product descriptions at scale. A store with 5,000 products needs 5,000 descriptions. AI can draft them from product attributes (material, size, colour, use), in several languages and tones, for human review.
Write a product description for an e-commerce listing.
Product: cotton kurta, men, indigo, hand block print, sizes S–XXL, made in Rajasthan.
Audience: urban professionals 25–40.
Format: 1 headline under 10 words, 3 benefit bullets, 1 care instruction line. Do not claim "organic" or "handloom".
Recommendation systems. "Customers who bought this also bought…" uses machine learning on purchase and browsing patterns. Two main methods:
- Collaborative filtering: recommend what similar users liked (Numerical 13.3).
- Content-based filtering: recommend items similar to those a user liked, by attributes.
AI shopping assistants. Conversational assistants answer product questions, compare items and guide choices in natural language, often in local languages.
Review analysis. AI summarises thousands of reviews into themes ("fits true to size", "colour fades after wash") and detects sentiment, helping buyers and sellers.
Other uses: visual search (search by photo), dynamic pricing, demand forecasting, fraud detection, virtual try-on and customer support chatbots.
13.3 Worked numericals
Numerical 13.1: Email funnel and ROI.
A campaign is sent to 50,000 subscribers. 48,000 are delivered; open rate is 22% of delivered; 3% of delivered recipients click; 10% of clickers buy; average order value is ₹1,250; campaign cost is ₹15,000.
Note that this uses revenue, not profit; a fuller ROI would subtract product cost.
Numerical 13.2: Value of an AI-optimised subject line.
An A/B test finds an AI-written subject line lifts the open rate from 22% to 25%, with clicks per open unchanged at 13.6%. What happens to orders, using the numbers above?
About 19 extra orders, or about ₹23,750 extra revenue, from a three-point lift in open rate.
Numerical 13.3: Collaborative filtering with cosine similarity.
Ratings (0 = not rated) for four products:
| User | Shoes | Bag | Watch | Belt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 5 | 3 | 0 | 1 |
| B | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| C | 1 | 1 | 0 | 5 |
User B is much more similar to A than C is. So items that B rates highly and A has not seen are good recommendations for A.
Numerical 13.4: Time to write product descriptions.
A seller has 5,000 products. Writing manually takes 12 minutes each; AI drafting plus human review takes 3 minutes.
The 750 hours saved is about 94 working days of 8 hours. (Per-item times are illustrative.)
13.4 Industry use cases
- Amazon review highlights (2023). In August 2023 Amazon began showing AI-generated short summaries of customer reviews on product pages in the US, highlighting common themes and sentiment.
- Amazon tools for sellers (2023). In September 2023 Amazon announced generative AI that lets sellers create product listings from a few words or a photo; sellers can review and edit before publishing.
- Amazon Rufus (2024). In February 2024 Amazon launched Rufus, a conversational shopping assistant trained on its catalogue, reviews and community Q&A, in beta in the US; it was later extended to India.
- The importance of recommendations. A widely cited 2013 McKinsey estimate attributed about 35% of Amazon's purchases to its recommendation engine. Treat this as an older estimate rather than a current figure.
13.5 Review questions
- Design a three-email welcome drip sequence for a new online bookstore, with AI prompt ideas for each email.
- Define open rate, CTR, CTOR and conversion rate.
- A campaign is delivered to 20,000 people; 4,400 open, 500 click, 40 buy at ₹2,000 each; cost ₹8,000. Find open rate, CTR, CTOR, conversion rate and ROI. (Answer: 22%, 2.5%, about 11.4%, 8% of clickers, 900%.)
- Explain collaborative and content-based filtering with examples.
- Compute the cosine similarity between users with ratings (3, 0, 4) and (2, 1, 5). (Answer: 26 / (5 × √30) ≈ 0.949.)
- Evaluate the risks of AI-generated product descriptions and how to control them.
