Builds an AI-assisted content strategy for YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, X and LinkedIn, with a content calendar and resume and LinkedIn branding. It measures engagement rate and click-through, and analyses the Cadbury and Coca-Cola campaigns.
12.1 Content strategy basics
A content strategy answers five questions: who is the audience, what do they need, where do they spend time, how often should we post, and how will we measure success. Generative AI speeds up research, ideation and drafting, but the strategy must come from knowledge of the brand and the customer.
AI-assisted strategy steps
- Audience persona: "Create two customer personas for a Kanpur-based brand of handmade leather bags, selling online to urban working women aged 25–40."
- Content pillars: "Suggest four content pillars for this brand, such as craftsmanship, styling tips, customer stories and sustainability."
- Ideas per pillar: "Give 10 post ideas for the 'craftsmanship' pillar."
- Platform adaptation: turn each idea into the right format for each platform.
- Calendar: schedule posts across the month.
- Measure and refine: review analytics and ask AI to suggest changes.
12.2 Platform-by-platform use of generative AI
| Platform | Content format | How AI helps | Example prompt |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Long and short videos | Video ideas, scripts, titles, descriptions, chapters, thumbnails text, subtitles | "Write a 5-minute YouTube script on '5 ways to care for leather bags in monsoon', with a hook in the first 10 seconds and chapter timestamps." |
| Images, carousels, Reels, Stories | Captions, hashtags, carousel text, Reel scripts, image generation | "Write 3 caption options under 150 characters for a Reel showing a bag being stitched by hand, with 8 relevant hashtags." | |
| Posts, groups, events, ads | Community posts, event descriptions, ad copy variants | "Write two Facebook ad versions for a Diwali sale: one emotional, one offer-focused." | |
| X (Twitter) | Short posts and threads | Threads, timely replies, summaries of news | "Turn this blog post into a 6-post thread, each under 280 characters." |
| Professional posts, articles, company pages | Thought-leadership posts, case studies, hiring posts | "Write a 200-word LinkedIn post from our founder on what we learned exporting to Europe; no hype, one clear lesson." |
One idea, many formats (repurposing). A single customer story can become a YouTube video, a 30-second Reel, a carousel, a LinkedIn post and an X thread. AI makes this repurposing quick, so one piece of research yields a week of content.
12.3 The AI-assisted content calendar
A content calendar lists what will be posted, where and when.
| Date | Platform | Pillar | Format | Topic | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Nov | Craftsmanship | Reel | From hide to handbag in 30 seconds | Drafted | |
| 4 Nov | Brand story | Post | Why we train local artisans | Idea | |
| 5 Nov | YouTube | Tips | Video | Caring for leather in winter | Scripted |
| 6 Nov | X | Customer stories | Thread | Five customers, five journeys | Idea |
| 7 Nov | Offers | Ad | Festive season gifting | Approved |
Prompt: "Create a 4-week content calendar as a table for these four pillars across Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. Columns: Date, Platform, Pillar, Format, Topic, Caption idea. Instagram 4 times a week, LinkedIn 3, X daily, YouTube weekly."
12.4 AI in professional branding
Professional branding is how an individual presents skills, values and achievements to employers, clients and peers.
| Asset | How AI helps | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn headline and "About" | Drafts a clear headline and summary from your achievements | Keep it truthful and in your voice |
| Resume | Rewrites bullet points with action verbs and results; tailors to a job description | Never add skills or achievements you do not have |
| Cover letter | Drafts a letter matched to the job | Personalise with real reasons you want the job |
| Portfolio | Writes project descriptions and case studies | Show your own work; disclose AI use |
| Personal brand statement | Distils strengths into one or two lines | Test it on people who know you |
| Interview practice | Role-plays an interviewer and gives feedback | Practise, do not memorise scripts |
Example: improving a resume bullet
- Before: "Worked on social media for college fest."
- Prompt: "Rewrite this resume bullet with an action verb and a measurable result. Facts: managed Instagram for the fest, 3 weeks, followers grew from 1,200 to 4,800, 45 posts."
- After: "Managed the college fest's Instagram for 3 weeks, publishing 45 posts and growing followers from 1,200 to 4,800 (4×)."
The numbers come from the student. AI only improves the wording.
Applicant tracking systems (ATS). Many employers screen resumes with software. AI can compare a resume with a job description and list missing keywords, but adding keywords for skills you lack is dishonest and will fail at interview.
12.5 Images and video for marketing
AI image tools (Chapter 16) create product mock-ups, backgrounds and social graphics; video tools create short clips and avatar videos (Chapter 17). Brands must check rights, avoid misleading images of the product, and follow platform rules on labelling AI-generated content.
12.6 Worked numericals
Numerical 12.1: Engagement rate.
An Instagram post reached 25,000 accounts and got 900 likes, 120 comments, 80 shares and 150 saves.
Platforms and agencies define engagement rate differently (by reach, impressions or followers), so always state the formula used.
Numerical 12.2: A/B test of AI-written headlines.
Two AI-generated ad headlines are each shown 20,000 times. Headline A gets 420 clicks; headline B gets 560.
Headline B performs about one-third better, so it becomes the default.
Numerical 12.3: Content production time.
The calendar in 12.3 needs Instagram 4, LinkedIn 3, X 7 and YouTube 1 post per week, so 15 per week, or 60 in four weeks. Manual drafting takes 45 minutes per post; AI-assisted drafting plus human editing takes 15 minutes.
The team saves 30 hours a month, which it can spend on strategy, community replies and quality checks. (The per-post times are illustrative.)
12.7 Industry use cases
- Cadbury "Not Just a Cadbury Ad" (India, 2021). Mondelez India's Cadbury Celebrations and Ogilvy used machine learning to let small shop owners generate personalised ads in which an AI-recreated Shah Rukh Khan named and promoted their local store. Made to help neighbourhood businesses hit by the pandemic, it reached thousands of local businesses and won the Cannes Lions Titanium award (Ogilvy case page). It was done with the actor's consent, an important point when AI recreates a real person.
- Coca-Cola "Create Real Magic" (March 2023). Coca-Cola launched a platform built with OpenAI and Bain & Company that combined GPT-4 and DALL·E. Digital artists used it to create artwork with Coca-Cola's brand assets, and selected work appeared on billboards in Times Square and Piccadilly Circus (Coca-Cola announcement).
- Generative AI and marketing value. McKinsey's 2023 estimate (Chapter 2) placed marketing and sales among the four business functions expected to capture about three-quarters of generative AI's value.
12.8 Review questions
- Describe a six-step AI-assisted content strategy for a local restaurant.
- For one idea, write prompts that adapt it for Instagram, LinkedIn and X.
- How should AI be used, and not used, in writing a resume?
- A post reaches 40,000 people and gets 1,400 likes, 200 comments, 100 shares and 300 saves. Compute the engagement rate. (Answer: 5.0%.)
- An email subject line gets 3.6% CTR against a control at 3.0%. What is the relative lift? (Answer: 20%.)
- Analyse the Cadbury campaign: what made it effective, and what ethical safeguards did it require?
